Human Rights Council of AJK Issues Open Letter to Prime Minister, Urges Immediate Dialogue to Resolve Ongoing Crisis

Muzaffarabad, 16 June 2026: The Human Rights Council of Azad Jammu & Kashmir (HRC-AJK) has issued an open letter to the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu & Kashmir, expressing serious concern over the deteriorating situation across the State and calling for urgent, meaningful, and result-oriented dialogue among all stakeholders. In the letter, HRC-AJK highlighted the growing challenges arising from the ongoing unrest, including loss of life, injuries, restrictions on public movement, and concerns regarding the availability of food, medicines, and other essential services. The Council emphasized that the protection of human life must remain the highest priority and urged all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions. HRC-AJK also expressed sympathy with the families affected by the recent violence and reiterated that democratic societies resolve disputes through dialogue, tolerance, and mutual respect rather than confrontation. The Council appealed to the Government of Azad Jammu & Kashmir to ensure uninterrupted access to hospitals, ambulance services, medicines, and essential commodities so that ordinary citizens do not face additional hardships during the ongoing situation. Furthermore, the Human Rights Council of AJK offered its support as an impartial human rights institution to assist in confidence-building efforts and facilitate constructive engagement between relevant stakeholders if required. President HRC-AJK, Mr. Ishtiaq Ahmed Qureshi, stated that restoring peace, stability, and public confidence should be the foremost objective of all parties. He expressed hope that the Government and other stakeholders would take timely and responsible measures to prevent further deterioration of the situation and work towards a peaceful and sustainable resolution. The Council concluded by reaffirming its commitment to the protection of human rights, promotion of peaceful dialogue, and strengthening of democratic values throughout Azad Jammu & Kashmir. HRC-AJK Statement on evolving situation in Jammu & Kashmir

The Human Rights Council of Azad Jammu & Kashmir (HRC-AJK) is closely monitoring the evolving situation across Azad Jammu & Kashmir and expresses its concern over the rising tensions, arrests, restrictions on communications, and reports of injuries and loss of life. HRC-AJK firmly believes that the rights to peaceful assembly, freedom of expression, access to information, and due process are fundamental human rights that must be protected under all circumstances. At the same time, all stakeholders must exercise restraint and ensure that public order is maintained through lawful and proportionate measures. We reiterate that lasting solutions cannot be achieved through confrontation. Meaningful dialogue, mutual respect, and constructive engagement remain the most effective path toward addressing public grievances and restoring confidence among all parties. HRC-AJK calls upon the relevant authorities to ensure the protection of fundamental rights, uphold the rule of law, guarantee fair legal treatment for all detainees, and facilitate an environment conducive to peaceful dialogue. We further urge all political, social, and civic actors to reject violence, avoid inflammatory rhetoric, and work collectively toward peace, stability, and the protection of human dignity.
